How to Safely Awaken Kundalini Energy?
Whatever be the person’s religious belief, the higher perfection in spirituality cannot be attained unless the kundalini energy is safely awakened in him. The awakening of this serpent power does not belong to any religious beliefs indeed only a universal phenomenon. The spiritual power ‘kundalini’ is now becoming a popular word even though it is little understood in the terms of practical aspects.
This ancient practice was kept secret as it involves many dangers that have to be encountered when not used in a proper way. Hence, this technique was taught by a proficient guru who guides him on the right path. Kundalini energy should not be considered as a mere spiritual energy; its potential is limitless. If an unprepared man tries to awaken this supernatural power, it seems like passing a million volts of potential to a 100 watts electric bulb. Purification of the physical, as well as the astral body, is mandatory prior to the awakening process where the subtle Nadis are present and this can be done by practicing yoga.
Different approach of kundalini awakening
There are different methods practically used to safely awaken the kundalini energy in man. All the forms of yoga are intended to awaken this spiritual energy in a safe manner. The raja yoga which deals with the training of mind through concentration and contemplation; hatha yoga which deals with the physical postures and exercises like asana, pranayama, bandhas and mudras; mantra yoga which deals with the vibrations of special sounds and thoughts in tantras; jnana yoga which deals with the absolute truth and innate principles; bhakti yoga which deals with the purity and self-surrendering of the mind and self are endowed with the awakening of kundalini energy.
Although all these forms of yoga will safely awaken this spiritual power, all these forms come in combination or as specific in the different levels of spiritual progression as I mentioned in the prior articles (see Forms of Yoga). Hence, all these terms can be commonly termed as the kundalini yoga whereas all leads to the awakening of this spiritual power.
The traditional method of kundalini awakening is not an easy process. It takes years of dedicated practice and effort. This practice leads the aspirant to the state of fully awakened kundalini rather than with the partially awakened power in the Shaktipat method. The shaktipat method only initiates the kundalini power and the fully awakening of this spiritual energy is left to the aspirant with the effort and disciplined practice.
The importance of shaktipat method is that it can safely awaken the kundalini energy in the aspirant. According to the philosophical text, the awakening of this serpent power is associated with the prior karmic presence of the individual. That is why each aspirant has required their own specific time to fully awaken this serpent power.
It should be considered in such a manner that the aspirant whoever follows the existing path of yoga fails to awaken this divine power after the years of dedicated practice and considering it as a mere wastage of time, but really he is on the path of awakening this supernatural power which clearly states in the yoga Sastra as “There he comes in touch with the knowledge acquired in his former body and strives more than before for perfection”,it says that it does not get destroyed and may lie in abeyance and certainly will be carried forward by the tendency created by the practice of yoga.
The role of prana
It is the potency of life force or prana involved in the awakening of the kundalini energy. I already mentioned that prana is the gateway to the subtle aspects and play a major role in the awakening process (see What is Prana in Yoga?).The kriya yoga meditation involving training of the mind by focusing on the breath is an effective technique, as the awakening of the kundalini deals with the concentration and focus of mind instead of imagination. This technique directs the life force ‘prana’ from the base of the spine to the Sahasrara chakra whereby involving upward and downward motion around six spinal centers.
Focusing of kundalini to rise above should be done in a gentle manner, where forcing this serpent power to rise above will result in dangers. Whatever be the technique one should have the proper guidance which is mentioned in the book “ Why Kundalini Meditation So Special?” gives a proper understanding of this divine energy.
Kundalini energy can be awakened by balancing the Ida Nadi and the Pingala Nadi and also by controlling the rising Prana and the descending Apana energy. Hence, it awakens through the Sushumna Nadi.
It is highly recommended not to practice this technique without the proper knowledge or on behalf of awakened teacher will lead one to the extreme dangers. The kundalini is spontaneously activated in the near-death experience (NDE) and in other life, situations resulted only in various traumas and kundalini syndrome which are ineffective to the modern medicines as it fails to detect the physical or mental cause, indeed the cause due to the imbalance of the vital life force energy. (Read also How to Practice Kundalini Meditation?)
The technique of awakening the kundalini energy cannot be endorsed in a single article which cannot be claimed as the safe method of awakening. The sublimation process which involves the backward-flowing method is also an effective method of awakening this spiritual power. Gopi Krishna and JJ Semple activated this serpent power through this process.
