Psychology of Meditation

Kundalini meditation deals not only with the human mind but also include other aspects such as the harmony with nature, knowing the self and the absolute as mentioned in ancient yogic texts. Relevant and obvious scientific aspects of the mind can be studied and examined through psychology. The psychology only deals with the outer sphere of the mind which is the extrinsic existential mind. Here telepathy, telekinesis etc. are the other aspects of the mind envisaged in parapsychology and metapsychology which are remaining to be explored explicitly under the mighty science.

The yogic texts describe four distinct entities or aspects that are involved in the case of meditation. They are described as the sense, mind, intellect and the soul. The kundalini meditation deals with controlling of the sense with the mind, then controlling the mind with the intellect, and then positioning it in the soul. This is not an easy task. Only a perfect disciplined practice will lead to this state.

The meditation has different states of consciousness and it is different from that of consciousness as mentioned in psychology. This technique has also a deep trance state which is similar to that of the trance mentioned in psychology. But this trance is not equal to the trance state obtained through the hypnosis or by using certain mind stimulating drugs. One day Swami Vivekananda was preaching about the qualities and virtues of meditation for the fellow people and to the disciples. He told that doing half an hour deep meditation will give the effect of six hours sleep. Suddenly one of the listeners asked Swami “Will then six hours sleep may give the effect of half an hour meditation”. Relations with the signs and symbols

The symbols and signs depicted in the kundalini chakras are rooted with the subconscious meaning. Each letter in the lotus petals have a meaning and symbolizes the growing organic aspect hidden in that particular region. It has to be considered that the sound of letters in the lotus petals can influence the state of one’s mind unconsciously.

The bija mantra also has the similar characteristics and it denotes the subconscious power of the chakra. The color also symbolizes certain psychic aspects. The white color is considered as the realm of higher intuition and the golden color represents the aspect of higher insight.

Psychological significance of kundalini meditation

The number of lotus petals in the chakras increases from Muladhara to the Vishuddha. This increase in number suggests that the psychic state of one’s mind gets altered to a higher state where the meaning of the life itself unfolds before proceeding to the higher level of chakras Ajna and Sahasrara.

The other factor is that the psychical experience differs from person to person as their anatomy, physiology, psychology differs from each other. Their state of mind is different and the level of spiritual energy differs, therefore, each kundalini yoga practitioners are having different progress in the state of attaining the higher consciousness.

The yogic practices as in the healing strategies should have a deeper knowledge in the mind-body aspect and their influence with the human nature. This gives the clear understanding of the spiritual and mental activities of a person and their physical and psychic well-being. It is that the psychiatric disorders such as depression, OCD, anxiety can be cured by practicing the ordinary meditation techniques.
